Authentic Conservative Mike Huckabee Is Big Winner In Iowa Caucus: Helps Redefine Politics In America
After spending seven million dollars in Iowa, Mitt Romney left Iowa last night having suffered a stinging victory from a candidate described in his own ads as an "authentic conservative" - Mike Huckabee. Iowa voters felt like he was someone they could trust - he was real, honest and genuine. The former Arkansas governor was outspent 20-1 and made a point in his victory speech that voters appreciate message over money. "People are more important than the purse," Huckabee said.
Huckabee tapped into a disenchantment among Americans regarding politicians saying or doing the right thing based on the latest poll or high-paid consultant's advice.
Huckabee almost followed an advisor's strategy to go negative, but he actually went with his own heart and gut. Imagine that - someone doing something because they feel it's the right thing to do. Iowans apparently appreciated that in Mike Huckabee.
Tom Bevan writes today in his article at RealClearPolitics.com that "Authenticity Wins" - here is an excerpt:
Clearly, last night was the embodiment of what we've been sensing all along: this is an election about change. But last night was also the triumph of authenticity in both parties: the two winners were candidates who were not the most experienced, did not speak in terribly specific policy terms, but were nevertheless were the most real and most sincere in their pitch to - and ultimately in their connection with - the voters of Iowa.
Last night we saw the result of the 'authenticity gap' in this race. Mitt Romney spent $7 million in Iowa touting himself as a candidate of conservative values and came away with only 25% of the vote. Hillary spent $6.7 million trying to portray herself as an agent of change and finished in third place with under thirty percent support. Voters simply did not buy the repackaging of these two candidates and instead opted for candidates who were, to use a cliche, exactly who they said they were.
Here is the definition of "authenticity" from the dictionary.
- not false or copied; genuine; real; having the origin supported by unquestionable evidence; verified; entitled to acceptance or belief because of agreement with known facts or experience; reliable, trustworthy.
Because of Mike Huckabee's success in Iowa, it just may become a new definition of politics in America.
