Mike Huckabee On The Issues: Sanctity Of Life - Views On Abortion And Pro Life Constitutional Amendment

Governor Mike Huckabee shares his views on important issues including "Sanctity Of Life."

  •  I support and have always supported passage of a constitutional amendment to protect the right to life.  My convictions regarding the sanctity of life have always been
clear and consistent, without equivocation or wavering.  I believe that Roe v. Wade should be over-turned.
  •  I applaud the Supreme Court's recent decision in Gonzales v. Cathcart forbidding the gruesome practice of partial birth abortion. While I am optimistic that we
are turning the tide in favor of life, we still have many battles ahead of us to protect those who cannot protect themselves, and so it is vital that we elect a pro-life President.
  • I first became politically active because of abortion, when I helped pass Arkansas' Unborn Child Amendment, which requires the state to do whatever it legally can to protect life.
  • As Governor, I did all I could to protect life.  The many pro-life laws I got through my Democrat legislature are the accomplishments that give me the most pride and personal satisfaction.  To me, life doesn't begin at conception and end at birth.  Every child deserves a quality education, first-rate health care, decent housing in a safe neighborhood, and clean air and drinking water.  Every child deserves the opportunity to discover and use his God-given gifts and talents.
  • I am opposed to research on embryonic stem cells.

I support and have always supported passage of a constitutional amendment to protect the right to life.  As President, I will fight for passage of this amendment.  My convictions regarding the sanctity of life have always been clear and consistent, without equivocation or wavering.  I believe that Roe v. Wade should be over-turned.

I applaud the Supreme Court's recent decision in Gonzales v. Cathcart forbidding the gruesome practice of partial birth abortion. While I am optimistic that we
are turning the tide in favor of life, we still have many battles ahead of us to protect those who cannot protect themselves, and so it is vital that we elect a pro-life President.

No candidate has a stronger record on the sanctity of life than I do.  I have always been actively and aggressively pro-life.  I first became politically active when I helped pass Arkansas' Unborn Child Amendment, which requires the state to do whatever it can to protect life.

As Governor, I used that Amendment to pass pro-life legislation.  The many pro-life laws I got through my Democrat legislature are the accomplishments that give me the most pride and personal satisfaction.  I banned partial birth abortion, I required parental notification, I required that a woman give informed consent before having an abortion, I required that a woman be told her baby will experience pain and be given the option of anesthesia for her baby, I allowed a woman to have her baby and leave the child safely at a hospital, and I made it a crime for an unborn child to be injured or murdered during an attack on his mother.

What I accomplished as Governor proves that there is a lot more that a pro-life President can do than wait for a Supreme Court vacancy, and I will do everything I can to promote a pro-life agenda and pass pro-life legislation.  If I'm saddled with a Democrat Congress, I'll veto any pro-abortion legislation they pass.  I will staff all relevant positions with pro-life appointees.  I will use the Bully Pulpit to change hearts and minds, to move this country from a culture of death to a culture of life.  I have no desire to throw women in jail, I just want us to stop throwing babies in the garbage.

To me, life doesn't begin at conception and end at birth.  Every child deserves a quality education, first-rate health care, decent housing in a safe neighborhood, and clean air and drinking water.  Every child deserves the opportunity to discover and use his God-given gifts and talents.

With respect to stem cells, I am opposed to research on embryonic stem cells.

Huckabee Campaign Thanks Grassroots Supporters

As we drive across the frozen highways in southern Iowa we are buoyed by the stunning news that CBS/NY Times poll as well as a CNN poll have us statistically tied for first place in the nation with Rudy Giuliani.

The dramatic upswing in our campaign is due to the tremendous volunteer effort of the friends like you who have believed in me, not because the conventional wisdom said we would win but because your convictions said we should win. With the soaring numbers putting us past the better known and better funded candidates who have in most cases outspent us 10-1, they are now in panic mode frantically trying to brush back the efforts you have made possible.

In addition to a whirlwind of negative attacks through press releases as well as being the target of the first negative attack television ad in the Republican cycle we are bombarded by attempts in the press to do media dumpster diving and surface any negative twists that my long time political opponents operating the Clinton machine in Arkansas have done.

We have repeatedly asked you and you have repeatedly responded with sacrificial contributions. Just last week in South Carolina a precious little 4 year old girl came to me at a campaign event and put in my hands three nickels and two dimes and said I want you to be president. While the amount of money may not buy a television ad to respond to these harsh attacks it fueled my enthusiasm as if it were a $2000 contribution.

Huckabee Issues Statement On Colorado Shooting

Gov. Mike Huckabee issued the following statement:

"The shootings in Colorado were horrific. Janet and I want to extend our thoughts and prayers -- first and foremost, to the victims and their families, as well as to all of those whose lives were touched by this needless tragedy. I want to also commend Security Guard Jeanne Assam for her bravery and act of heroism. Ms. Assam's statements that she was guided by the Holy Spirit, in the face of great danger, are inspiring and remind us of what we mere mortals can achieve when we allow ourselves to be instruments of our Creator. Now is the time for healing. May God bless those who were affected by this tragedy, and our great nation."

Huckabee Responds To Negative Attacks

In light of increased recent negative attacks by other campaigns and the media, Governor Huckabee offered this positive statement yesterday:

Rival campaigns are leveling attack after attack against us. Some of these attacks are coming from campaigns directly and others are made indirectly through their allies in the media. Let me be clear about our response: we aren't going negative. I've learned that people attack usually for one of two reasons: either out of fear or a survival instinct. Neither of which I believe are qualities of a strong leader. My focus is the same as it always has been, discussing issues with voters and listening to their concerns.

Huckabee Speaks About His Rise In The Polls

Statement by former AR Governor Mike Huckabee -

The numbers show we are climbing in the early states as well as nationally. My conservative message of faith, family, and freedom is resonating with the American people. They know its authentic. Ironically, the more we get attacked, the more our numbers soar.

There's no substitute for message -- and the voters know it.  That is why we'll be out front in the only polls that really matter- those on the respective primary and caucus days.

This recent flurry of polls showing upward momentum is great news, but what matters is performance. I'm going to continue to campaign hard to win the hearts and minds of the voters who I believe will be receptive to my positive message of change for America's future.
